GODZILLA

This is a creature from movies, but in a way it is a folklore (Mythological) creature, as it's an allegorical one. (Godzilla is what is known in Japan as a "Kaiju". this is a creature that is more than just a mere monster, it also has supernatural overtones.)

Godzilla's birhtplace is Japan in the Ogasawara islands and bikini atol. His real (Japanese) name is Gojira. pronounced: "Gojeela".
His first appearance was in the movie "GOJIRA" in 1954. When released in the U.S. , the film was retitled "GODZILLA KING of the MONSTERS" in 1955.
Godzilla was just a regular aquatic dinosaur, living in the deep sea, un discovered by man kind, until the testing of the Atomic bomb in the bikini atol. The radiation mutated the creature, increseing his size and streangth and giving him the ability to fire an atomic heat plazma beam (not fire) from his mouth, similar to the ability of a dragon breathing fire. The radiation also caused the generaly "peaceful" species of dinosaur to become highly aggresive.
Seeking vengance on humanity Godzilla comes ashore in Tokyo and lays waste to the city, killing thousands.
No weapon formed by the hand of man could stop this super beast, until a scientist (Dr. Serazawa) created what is called the "Oxygen -destroyer", It was a divice that disintigrated oxygen in water and all things around it liquified.
In the end this weapon was used on Godzilla destroying the King of the monsters, along with Dr. Serazawa who sacrificed his own life to destroy Godzilla and to insure that the Oxygen Destroyer woud never be turned against humanity, the secret of the device dying along with Godzilla and Serazawa.
Of course the Japanese people are the only humans that suffered the atomic bomb directly. This was during WWII, when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Gojira was an alogory for the Atom bomb and the horrors suffered along with it. This is why Godzilla belongs in the Mythical beasts catagory.
At any rate the film was a box office smash so Godzilla was reserected in the second film "Godzilla's counter attack" (aka Godzilla raids again)1955. This was a second Godzilla and the one that everyone is most familiar with.
The sequal did poorly so Godzilla was shelved until the 1960's when he was again revived to do battle with the American monster KING KONG, this film was so succesful that it is to this day one of the highest grossing flms in Japanese history.
Henceforth many sequals were then made. The origional Godzilla movie was the only one that had a sober, serious tone, nearly all others were basicaly campy and played for laughs. ( NOTE: Godzilla is not based on an actual species of dinosaur that existed, His design is based on The Iguanodon, Stegosaurus and a bit of T-rex, with some elements of a dragon. He was performed by a man in a rubber monster suit. originally, Godzilla had four toes and two tiny ears for the first 2 films, but when he was reserected in 1962 for his bout with King Kong, he had only 3 toes and the 2 ears were gone as well. This basic design was consitant until 1984, when the 4 toes and tiny ears were returned to the Godzilla suit design. By and large, Godzilla is the most recognised Monster world wide.)
