Tolkien wrote the hobbit when he stayed / taught at Stonyhurst College. His son Michael later became head master at St Marys.
Tolkien wrote the book in what is now a IT class room looking out over the Shires (Hurst Green and Clitheroe. The Misty Mountains - pendle Hill the Brandy wine river was the calder /Hodder that flowed near by.There is also a pub situated in Hurst Green called the shireburn arms. This area in Lanca(shire ) was portraide in the book the Hobbit ! I know all this info as i worked for sometime in Stonyhurst ,Tolkien even etched his name into a desk that now stands in the top gallery....i polished the desk daily whilst working there ! There is also a walk that runs beside the college and the Shireburn arms called the Tolkien walk that is where the author walked daily and spurred the ideas for the book .
Beautiful place ....i know i live close by ....lucky me :0)
