A shape-shifting demon that lures people into the woods? What is it?
Nov 8 2012, 10:35 PM EST
There's a creature I was always scared of as a kid (and admittedly a bit so today), that for the life of me, I can't remember what it's called or where I heard about. I believe it's fictional (as in from a modern-ish book, not from classical mythology or a folk tale). I think it might have been in an Edward Gorey story, since my dad always had a huge Edward Gorey collection and I was fascinated by the pictures and stories, but I was only allowed to read a couple "age appropriate ones" (but of course I always sneaked a peek at the books anyway). But, to get to the point: The creature in question is a small shape-shifting monster (demon?) who lives in the woods, always near to, but never on, the walking path. It wails and screams like a small child to try and lure people off the path. No matter how long you've been walking the noise (and creature) is always near, so long as you are still in the woods. If someone's curious or worried and decides to take a look, the moment their foot is off the path they'll find a bundle, like a baby wrapped in a blanket. If they leave the bundle and go back onto the path, nothing will happen, but the crying will continue. If they pick up the bundle, they will see something horrific inside, which will start giggling like a baby and then kill, eat, and or torture their miserable souls for all eternity. In the story I read, I believe there was a very large scorpion inside the blanket which disemboweled the person who found it, but I believe the book also mentioned the creature being a shape-shifter, as well as the fate the person suffered varying. A very strange, scary monster for sure. Any possible leads on what this is/ what it's from? 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

It's a shapeshifter. Figura Mutante. There are different kinds of shape shifting creatures, but this one is evil. There is no way to kill it, except for one. Take a small bucket of water, a black feather, and a knife. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Take a small bucket of water, a black feather, and a knife."The black feather has to be from an actual bird, not from the craft store. 1) Tape or tie the feather onto the toe of your shoe, on the bottom side. 2) Go into the woods and walk for 7 minutes. Turn to your left, and set the toe of your right foot, with the feather, off of the path. 3) The 'baby' will sound confused. It will coo, and look at you, and hold up its hands. It might try to babble the word 'up.' 4) DO NOT PICK UP THE BUNDLE 5) Pour the water over the bundle. The 'baby' will shift back into its true form, which looks sort of like Cthulhu. 6) It's going to be angry, and then you have to be quick. Stab it in its beak with the knife. 7) RUN 8) Don't stop. Don't look back. Don't trip. Keep moving at all costs. Don't look down. Don't look to your sides. Don't look above you. Look straight ahead, eye level, at all times. DO NOT LEAVE THE PATH 9) Once you're out of the woods, don't turn around. Just keep walking, until you're inside your house, preferably with another person. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"The black feather has to be from an actual bird, not from the craft store. So there is a use for practicing to prank people! And for times as these, I am almost sorry I haven't pranked people. (Then again I don't know of any woods with a creature like that in it) 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'm from Native American descent and this sounds like the Tsiatko (Stick Indian) that are spoken about in stories. Although the descriptions may differ at some extent, they sound alike in a few ways.
