It's Similar to Wolves

The "throwing cubs off a cliff" thing is similar to what wolves do. If a wolf pup is unresponsive at birth, or has any deformation, it could prove fatal to the pack at large, and so the one female of the pack who has no mothering instinct takes the pup and drops it in a river. 6  out of 7 found this valuable. Do you?
