Just what ARE the facts about Brownies?
All my life, since I was a kid, I've heard and and read stories about them. But they are so INCONSISTENT! One story describe Brownies as cute little elves looking like a child, another describes them as wizened ugly little men. Still other legends describe them as only 2 feet tall, while others say they stand anywhere between 3 to 5 feet tall. And still other stories and legends say they have no fingers or toes, others say they have no nose and still others say they have both no fingers and toes and no nose! Some say they wear fine clothing while others say they wear tattered brown clothing. The only real consistency is that they do house work, usually asking for nothing in return except a bowl of milk, cream or porridge.
Then there are the stories about the Fenadoree who is a BIG brownie around 4 to 5 1/2 feet tall who mows grass, and then throws it off a cliff if he gets mad. And then there is the Gruagach that is described as a TALL guy with long brown hair.
Even the legends of Goblins are more consistent. But What is the truth about Brownies? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
