Isn't it a sea creature with the upper body of a horse and the lower half of a fish.

Campe (kampe) means twisted and hippo means horse (hippophobia is the fear of horses and hippopotamus means water horse). So almost "twisted horse" which is fascinating since horses were origanlly Posideon's gift from the sea!
