I didn't know griffins were females. Why wouldn't they have the same name, but be identified male or female by their wings? Why give them seperate names?

It's like cocks and hens, stallions and mares. This is my favorite version; it says they are one species and refers to females as "hens" insteadhttp://forums.orderofthegriffin.net/showthread.php?t=300.
