i think this cause there are multiple talismans to keep them away. this website lists multiple characters that are not extremely harmful. fairies are mostly known for small annoyances. they are labeled as either good or bad(seelie or unseelie court). iron guards against them and many other supernatural beings 5  out of 6 found this valuable. okay sweetie, I am not a monster.
annoyances? okay maybe that isn't so inaccurate.
don't label entire races, that's racist.
the iron thing is a lie.

Well, actually who better than an actual FAE would know that the iron thing is a lie?
Although, I do have to admit I do have a bit of a metal allergy. ...Does THAT count??

Grim the Goblin.

There. I have an avitar now, so It wont get so confusing with all the annons posting. BTW, that avitar is closer to what real goblins look like. (though, MY nose isn't quite so big)
Anyway, to further the response on Faires being adverse to metal, If we were how then could we handle COINS. You know Silver or Gold or whatever. We Goblins LOVE silver coins. We handle them all the time. And if Leprechans had a "metal aversion" they'd get no where NEAR a pot of gold. Nor would they be able to handle the metal nails used to make shoes.
As for iron, There is a speicies of Goblin, called a REDCAP that wears IRON BOOTS. Though some ledgends say it "pains them to wear such boots". It's said that they wear the iron boots out of their "superstisious beleifs". Whatever that means. To be fair though, I don't, personaly like Iron. I don't like the way it feels to the touch, and I don't like the smell of it. Maybe THAT is where those legends got started. Ther are also those who say; that the Fae dislike iron because it was the begining of Man's assent from "innocence" when they began to forge iron, particularly into weaopons.

P.S.
Sorry about the spelling. errors My spell check ain't a workin' right. And we Goblins ain't the best ejimucated lot. (at least I ain't got no problem with GRAMMER!) ;-)
