... The Birth of Apollo and Artemis When Apollo's mother was in labor with him and his twin sister Artemis, she was looking for a place to give birth, but Hera had made all land shun her so she was unable to find a place to give birth. Hera was very angry because Zeus kept having children with other women and goddesses, after finding out about this affair she sent a monstruous serpent, the Python, to follow Leto day and night, so as she could have no peace to have her children. But Leto made it to the island of Delos, where she gave birth to Artemis. The mother was too tired to have the second baby, but precocious Artemis helped her to give birth to Apollo. Their father Zeus gifted both children bows and arrows. Apollo was a intelligent baby, as well. He was only four days old when he followed and killed the Python as a revenge for having given his mother a hard time. But the Python being the son of the goddess Gaia, so Apollo had to pay for his crime. He had to become king Admetus' servant for one year. King Admetus treated him kindly, so Apollo told him that, when it came time for him to die, he could continue to live if he could find someone else to take his place. Niobe's Insult One day, Niobe, queen of Thebes, declared she was better then Leto, who only had two children, while the queen herself had six girls and six boys. Leto was offended by all this, so she told her children about it. Apollo and Artemis both dispatched Niobe's children with haste; Apollo her sons and Artemis her daughters.
