There's no telling really. Some people think they are and some think they aren't. And both are possible really. You just have to go with what you think.
I mean myths started thousands of years ago and you could argue that if they didn't exist then we wouldn't have them now, but you could also say that, particularly with the different creatures that people would go travelling in a new place and they wouldn't know what the different animals where and when they went back and told others about them they created a whole new creature.
