Writing a story

Hey guys I am interested in trying to write a story of my own (I do this from time to time) and I wanted to create my story around some type of mythology or folklore, but not sure which one I should do. I DONT want anything that has been really played out like: Vampires, Werewolves, Wizards, Dragons, etc. I know everything has sort of been done in some way shape or form, but I wanted to try and create a fun adventure like story, slight romance, intrigue and mystery by using some type of folklore or mythology as the basis for the story. Does anyone have any good ideas? Do you find this valuable?

im doing the same.. to make one properly you should choose one that has a vast difference in legends like the kraken then you could make up stuff.
