Writing a story

Hey guys I am interested in trying to write a story of my own (I do this from time to time) and I wanted to create my story around some type of mythology or folklore, but not sure which one I should do. I DONT want anything that has been really played out like: Vampires, Werewolves, Wizards, Dragons, etc. I know everything has sort of been done in some way shape or form, but I wanted to try and create a fun adventure like story, slight romance, intrigue and mystery by using some type of folklore or mythology as the basis for the story. Does anyone have any good ideas?

I am actually wanting to do the virtually the same thing as you, not completely the same though so can't really give you any ideas but can give advice, don't give up & keep following your dream
