Classification: Mythical
Origin: Norse
Also known as Hlér or Gymir, was a giant god of the sea whose wife was Ran. Very similar to the god Poseidon, he ruled over the sea. This particular god loved to throw feasts and parties in which he invited the rest of the gods. He is described and shown in art as thin old giant with clutching hands and long white hair that resembles sea foam. As friendly an fun-loving as he seems, one would not think that he would be responsible for sailors' deaths. Although apparently their spirits would be invited to feast with him. Did I forget to mention the rest of his family? His nine daughters were called the spirits of waves or ocean waves. Two of the more well known daughters were Howler and Grasper. It seems like the ancients feared and respected the ocean. Perhaps we still do, considering all the mysteries still left.
