the "unknownthings" used to create that chain, it's not so much that they're impossible to find as much as it is that the dwarves used all of those items up, and that's why a cat's footfalls are silent, and a mountain has no roots. 5  out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

Oh, didn't know that.

Though geologically speaking, mountains do have roots.

The discussion is based on Norse mythology, not scientific or geological facts. The ancient Norse didn't have the knowledge that we have today. Don't spoil the discussion by interjecting scientific findings into mythological stories.
