Yokai - Object Transformations

This group of Yokai are collectively known as Tsukumogami. They are objects, who on the hundredth year of existence gain life; they are often neglected or ill treated objects. However many modern day items like TVs and I-Pods are incapable of obtaining this life as the spirits are repelled by electricity. This group is virtually limitless but some of the well known ones are :-

Abumi-guchi - A living stirrup usually having belonged to a fallen soldier. Tales were told how these furred creatures waited where they lay for the fallen soldier to return.
Bakechochin (Chochinobake) - A living lantern carried by ghosts or obake. Bakechochin means "haunted lantern". The lantern has a long tongue protruding from its mouth and a pair of eyes. It serves as a home for the spirits of people who died with hatred and anger in their hearts and are therefore earthbound. If a person lights one of these haunted lanterns by mistake, then the hateful spirit inside will jump out and attack.
Bakezori - A living sandal. It was seen to have one eye, two feet and run around the house shouting "Kararin, kororin, kankororin!".
Ittan-momen - A living roll of cotton. It will fly through the air at night and smother people's faces in an attempt to choke them.
Karakasa - A living umbrella. Often portrayed as having one eye, one foot and a lolling tongue.
Ungaikyo - A living mirror. Occasionally said to have occult powers.
Zorigami - A living clock.
