BEST MOVIE GOBLIN EVER!!!!
I've seen a lot of movies with or about Fairies and 99%-100% of the time they get it WRONG!
Everything from LORD OF THE RINGS, HARRY POTTER, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES
to even a movie like LABYRINTH.
And although the movies may be good, their depictions of the Fae are almost always incorrect.
Especially when it comes to GOBLINS. (from the historical, original legends perspective)
But every now and then, (but VERY rarely) someone gets it pretty darn close.
I present to you the Goblin featured in the 1995 movie RUMPELSTILTSKIN.
Yes, Rumpelstiltskin is a Goblin. Most people don't even realise this fact.
Most think of him as an "evil dwarf". But historically, Goblins are described as
"(usually) ugly, deformed, in some way, and DWARFISH".
When we see Goblins portrayed in modern media, especially film, the so called "Goblins"
resemble Demons and Gargoyles, more than the squat, deformed dwarfs, they are supposed to be.
Also, the Goblins are nearly always depicted as either too big, or too small.
And they are almost ALWAYS portrayed as being GREEN! Goblins were and are not green.
They are not 10 feet tall and they are not 6 inches tall. They ranged (range) from as small as 2 feet tall,
to five feet or slightly more. Some do approach average human size, but very very rarely surpass it.
But the film made in 1995 gets it almost exactly right. Rumpelstiltskin is not green. he is not 10 feet tall and "Orc-ish"
and he is not too small. (6 inches or 1 foot) He stands about 5 feet even, standing straight up,
but is usually hunched over, making him closer to roughly 4 and a half feet tall.
He also doesn't wear medieval armor, carry a battle-ax or "eat humans", and any other of that nonsense
we see with other Goblin depictions, in cinema. He does wear some medieval clothing,
but it's appropriate for the time period he comes from, plus much of it is traditional "Goblin-wear".
The most traditional (and correct) clothing he wears is his reddish-brown studded biggins cap,
finger-less gloves, something called a "Grandfather's-shirt" and a vest.
And although, the earliest descriptions of Goblins made no mention of pointed ears,
I will let this version of Rumpelstiltskin get by with it, because, frankly, they look cool on him.
While he is uglier than most Goblins, it works for him, since he is an EVIL s.o.b. in this film.
So....
Have a look for yourself, below.
